Well I feel like I am already back in the full swing of this semester! No time to waste. It is weird knowing that it will be my last semester of classes before I graduate in May with my biology degree. It’s amazing how time flies. I feel like it was just yesterday that I was a freshman moving into Merlini.

A quick update on my recent Newman service trip to Mobile, Alabama over the break…I had an amazing time! Our participation in the Habitat for Humanity program down there was both educational and inspiring. I loved our hands on involvement in building the houses for the less fortunate. My work included helping shingle a roof, measuring and sawing countless boards, nailing up support beams inside the homes, bracing up the initial framing, drilling “go bolts” into the concrete foundation, and many other odd jobs. Let’s just say I did things I never thought that I would get the chance to do. It was hard work but I had a great time meeting many new friends from around the country. Our chaplain here at school, Fr. Tatro, accompanied us on our trip so we were also all able to go to daily mass and have night prayer every night. Overall, it was an experience that I will never forget. Now back home on campus, I am looking into Habitat for Humanity volunteer opportunities within the Wichita community.

This service trip was just another example to me of how my time at Newman has allowed for me to grow as a person and participate in things that I never thought I would have a chance to do.

The semester break has been amazing and it is about to get even better! Tomorrow I leave for a week long Habitat for Humanity service trip. This service trip is run through the school and there are about 20 Newman students who will be going on it with me! We are heading to Mobile, Alabama to work on building houses for a week but I am sure we will do plenty of fun things throughout the week as well. Yet another example of one of the wonderful opportunities that Newman University has to offer!

Clare Ewald

Clare Ewald My name is Clare and I am a fifth-year senior at Newman University. I can’t believe that I have already been here for four whole years! The time has definitely flown by. My favorite memories range from building the biggest snowman on campus with my friends from Nepal one winter to winning the conference tournament with my soccer teammates another year. I have made some amazing friends and can’t wait to make more memories with them in my final year at Newman. Who knows what will happen this year!
